Born in 1989 in France, Anthony J. Moreau is a self-taught painter and draftsman whose practice explores the delicate boundary between realism and abstraction. Guided by both instinct and structure, his work seeks to reveal the emotional and material presence of the human figure through an expressive figuration, built through additions and erasures, in a play of mass and line.
Influenced by French artistic traditions, from the Belle Époque to Post-Impressionism, the artist pursues a lasting emotion through simplified forms of representation that often preserve only the essential. His exploration extends into the very language of visual art—graphic choices, compositions, and textures—which he investigates particularly through the nuanced qualities of oil painting, as well as charcoal and graphite on paper.
He tirelessly gathers ideas, tones, textures, objects, and visual fragments, in preparation for future works. From these sometimes complex amalgamations arise ideal and harmonious compositions that evoke the ineffable. These collages become the foundation for oil paintings executed primarily on linen canvas.
Through this process, Anthony J. Moreau establishes a bridge between tradition and innovation, by which he captures the essence of human experience and invites the viewer to contemplate the interplay of form, color, and emotion—beyond time and space.
